A Materials Recovery Facility, is the primary way that post-consumer products can re-enter production rather than being sent to a landfill.  Most MRFs engage in downcycling out of sheer economic necessity; they do not have the space to store complete objects, nor the ability to advertise every one of those objects.

“Clean” MRFs accept materials separated at the source and process them either in a single stream or multiple streams.  “Dirty” MRFs accept mixed waste which is sorted through a combination of manual and mechanical means.

The typical MRF processing of wood consists of sorting out the treated and painted pieces, removing metals such as nails by electromagnet, and then chipping the wood to be sold as mulch or biomass for use in energy plants.
