KNOTS /nɒts/

The presence of knots is one of the main reasons why a particular piece of wood or veneer would be rejected from an industrial process.  This is because knots are points of weakness in the wood, a consideration particularly important for structural applications.  In addition, some may find knots to be unsightly.

Knots are the traces of the vascular systems of branches.  Thus, most of the time one can predict where knots will occur by the location of branches, though sometimes branch formation will have been aborted and the knot will remain hidden beneath the bark until the tree is processed at a sawmill.
