The Funk Brothers manufacture handmade, custom furniture in downtown Charlottesville for a variety of customers. Their process generally begins with the prepration of rough lumber or logs into smooth, planar boards which can be shaped and fitted together to create high-quality, hardwood furniture. After the wood is sawn, jointed, and planed, the process becomes more variable and iterative, specifically depending on the type of furniture being produced. Hand-tools and smaller bandsaws are used to create curves in the wood, and to finish pieces. After a piece is completely assembled and glued, a varnish or coating is applied to seal the wood and complete the product.
