Composition

  • hard woods: Red Oak, White Oak, Ash, Walnut, Cherry, Hickory, Hard+Soft Maple
  • kiln-dried wood with 6-8% water content
  • unfinished

Properties

  • color varies depending on the wood species
  • visible knots are almost black compared to rest of the wood.
  • very dense
  • very dry

Form

  • rectangular, mostly long proportioned
  • very rough surface
  • width varies from 2.25” – 2.5”
  • sometimes ends are painted
  • often cracked
  • often contain knots

Process

receive wood from sawmills, kiln dry, store, plane, rip to molder blank

Application

these are the unsalable parts of wood that have been removed before molding. they are sent to an on-site chipper and burned for energy that heats both the kiln and the plant. occasionally they are insufficient and wood scraps must be purchased.
